Meet Greta Lutman
Greta Lutman, MA, LCMHC
Director Family Intensives & Workshops
Greta Lutman graduated from Wake Forest University with a BA in Anthropology in 1988 and completed her MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Appalachian State University in 1992. For thirty-four years, she has been a therapist for adolescents, young adults, and their families in the contexts of inpatient substance abuse treatment and therapeutic wilderness programs and boarding schools. She currently has a private psychotherapy practice outside of Asheville, North Carolina. Greta understands that family strengths and problems shape us, therefore, healing must involve focusing on resolving family issues.
Family therapy is not about showing families the next correct course of action. Rather, it is about gaining an understanding of family systems and helping them come to solutions for themselves.
Believing that an honest struggle is better than the right answer, Greta is here to help clients have an honest struggle in their roles as parents, children, and siblings. That means clarifying what is within their control; letting go of what is not; shifting perspectives about the family’s impasses, attitudes, and identity; and understanding dynamics from a broader, more holistic perspective. Greta believes that when families work to see things from a different viewpoint, they may see paths and solutions that were not visible before.
Away from work, Greta is a fanatic for art; antiques; mid-century modern design and architecture; and international food, culture, and music. In 2018, she completed an associate’s degree program in jewelry design and metalsmithing, a bucket list item since 19 years old! Greta enjoys spending time with friends and family, and shares custody of a wonderful Belgian Malinois, Oso.
